Fun February Holidays

By: Celeste Mendez

The month is almost over, but it isn’t too late to celebrate some of the weird and fun holidays coming up. There are many national and international holidays every month.

Here are a few for this month:

This Saturday, February 27th, has two national holidays, National Strawberry day and national Polar bear day. There is no exact country that either of these holidays belongs to, but they are both more commonly celebrated by Americans. National Strawberry Day was created in 2013 by the grocery industry to boost strawberry sales and production even though strawberries harvest in April and not February. There isn’t much needed to celebrate this holiday. All you need is to incorporate strawberries into your day and make it fun. You can bake with strawberries, have a smoothie with strawberries, or just eat them as they are. Fun fact: the average strawberry has over 200 seeds.

National Polar bear day is a day created by Polar Bear International, an organization dedicated to saving polar bears and educating people about how to help. Since this holiday was built in 2011, the organization has gained more and more supporters for it. Polar bear international has a website where you can learn more about polar bears and the current issues they are facing. To learn more, go to https://polarbearsinternational.org/. To celebrate this holiday, do some research on how you can help, watch a documentary about polar bears or use one of the many hashtags for polar bear preservation and show your support to saving polar bears.

Another odd upcoming holiday is National Public Sleeping Day. This day is celebrated on Sunday, February 28th, and is a holiday that was suspected to be a joke at first and then became a real holiday once it was gained more traction. It is said that sleep is just as important as exercise and a healthy diet. All you do is a nap in a public location to celebrate this holiday, although it is highly recommended that you don’t go to a public place. Maybe try something safer like your living room or your dining room. Consider it a public location, as it is unsafe to nap in an actual public place if you decide to celebrate this holiday. Happy napping, and stay safe.

The last Holiday that is recorded to be this month is Rare Disease Day. this is a national holiday that was created in 2008. European and Canadian organizations launched it to bring awareness to rare diseases. It was made to be on February 29th, the leap day, to emphasize that it is ‘rare’ disease day by putting it on a rare day. It spread more in 2009 and is now acknowledged by dozens of countries and large medical organizations, support groups, and patient advocacy teams. To celebrate it, check out the hashtag #rarediseaseday on any social media platform and spread love and support for those with rare diseases.
