Back Into the Twilightverse

This past August, Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight Saga, released a book titled Midnight Sun. The novel gives us a parallel perspective from the first Twilight book, this time being narrated by Edward. As an avid Twilight fan, I immediately pre-ordered the book when I first heard about it back in May. Once I was able to finally read it, I was thrown right back into my 7th grade Twilight obsession. I’m still reading it - as school has taken away a lot of my reading time - but it’s absolutely phenomenal. However, this article is not about Midnight Sun. After being thrown back into my Twilight phase, I decided I needed to watch all of the movies again. While I prefer the books, the movies are definitely fun. I binged all of them the day before they were removed from Amazon Prime. In this article, I’m going to discuss some of my overall thoughts on these movies.
First off - although Bella is the main character, she’s extremely unlikable in the movies until she becomes a vampire in Breaking Dawn part 2. I love Kristen Stewart but I would definitely hate human Bella if I knew her personally. She lacks substance and falls in love with a man who wanted to murder her when they first met. She’s utterly boring and makes me uncomfortable half the time. Bella as vampire, however, is my absolute favorite. We’d be best friends. She knows what she wants and takes it, she’s stunning, and she’s no longer uncomfortable to watch.
Second, there should have been more ‘fun’ vampire scenes. For example, when the Cullens play baseball and when we get to see their cool vampire abilities. Those were my favorite moments in the movies, but unfortunately there’s not many of them in the films - the books definitely have plenty though. We all love the Cullens and we shouldn’t only get to see them during a vampire war.
New Moon is my least favorite book and movie. Obviously because Bella does nothing but mope for 75% of it. I loved the Jacob and Italy content but for the most part it’s boring and sad. I also can’t stand any of Bella’s human friends. How does she hang out with the most annoying people possible? Every time I saw Jessica I was tempted to turn off the movie. I’m only slightly kidding.
I will always believe Edward and Bella belong together, but if I had the choice between Edward and Jacob, I’d most definitely choose Jacob. He’s gorgeous, has a great sense of humor, can turn into a giant dog, doesn’t crave blood, and would be my personal heater. Edward is way too serious, I swear he doesn’t smile for like 3 movies. Jacob, however, is a ray of sunshine and I think we’d have a lot of fun together. He has to work on his anger issues though. The man needs to take a serious chill pill.
Now, we need to talk about Robert Pattinson’s sideburns in Eclipse. I am a HUGE Pattinson fan (a pattinstan if you will) but honey, those were awful. I need to know who let him look like that. It’s been years since the movies were released and I’m still not over that poor costume choice. I’d take the brown sweat suit Rob over awful sideburn Rob anyday.
Breaking Dawn part 2 is my favorite movie. Purely because of all the fun vampire and wolf scenes. We get to see so many cool characters and more of Bella and Edward’s relationship, now that he isn’t terrified to be within 5 feet of her. The Volturi are dope despite being “evil” or whatever. I wish I could rock a cloak the way they do.
Despite my playfully mean comments towards the movies, I do love them and I watch them whenever I’m in dire need of more serotonin. Sure, they’re cringey but they’re also early 2000s works of art. Vampires, werewolves, Robert Pattinson, romance, adventure - what more could you ask for? If you haven’t read the books or seen the movies, I strongly suggest you do. And if you have, let me know your thoughts!
